About the Host

I am life long hunter and fisherman. While I will hunt most anything during season, my first true love is wing shooting. While growing up in Chattanooga, I developed the love of bird hunting from my dad, Chuck. Most any weekend, we would trek through the mountains of East Tennessee in pursuit of Grouse & Bob White Quail. Some of my best memories are taking shots in such heavy cover you can’t image a pellet finding its mark (mine mostly did not, but my dad was always there to clean up my mess).

Continuing with the wind shooting, my new love is Pheasants. I went to South Dakota for the first time in 2005 and starting in 2007, it will become an annual trek. We hunt about fifty miles from Mitchell with a wonderful family named Skoglund (www.skoglundfarm.com). About 15 of my closes friends and I spend a glorious week chasing after these flying chickens. This is my newest adventure and one I hope to pursue for many years to come.

Not to offend, I also love to hunt ducks and other winged creatures. I also pursue deer, hog & turkey on a regular basis.

I could not continue without mentioning our dogs. My favorite hunting companion is an American Brittany. I have had three through the years and recently put Beau down at the ripe old age of 14. I do not think you can really appreciate hunting until you have hunted over your best friend. I know there are always debates about what is the best dog to have. Let me just say, as long as it is a sporting dog, you can’t go wrong. Just for me, if a dogs bounds out of my truck, it will most likely be a Brittany.

When not hunting, you can find me on the water. I will never admit to be an expert fisherman, but I do love to try. I will pursue any type of game fish that are currently biting. Being from the south, crappie and bass are always fun to chase; but so are catfish, blue gill, and stripers. I also enjoy trying to catch trout in the steams of Tennessee. My favorite Tennessee trout water has to be the Elk, followed by the Tellico River. But I have to admit, pulling big browns from the White River in Arkansas is a trip everyone must experience.

I am also involved in the hunter education program in Tennessee for the past 11 years. I have been the chair of the hunter safety program at Highland Sportsman Club in Chattanooga for the last six years. I was honored in 2001 as the Tennessee Wildlife Federation and the Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency Hunter Safety Instructor of the Year. It was an honor to be chosen the Instructor of the Year among all of the fine instructors across the state. These dedicated volunteers give up countless hours trying to make the sport of hunting a little safer for all of us. I have been blessed with an organization that currently has several instructors. I really admire the men and women in rural areas of the country that teach by themselves. It truly takes dedication and desire to give this much time back to the sport.

That brings us to the radio show; Tony Sanders Outdoors. Originally started in April 2007 as “Hunting and Fishing with Tony Sanders” the radio show has developed out of my love for the outdoors and the desire to discuss hunting and fishing as often as possible. The show concept has been worked on for several years, and when the right time slot became available, we jumped at the shot. The show is a mixture of very knowledgeable guest discussing topics of interest coupled with a little humor and hopefully some entertainment often provided by my good friend Steve Anderson.  Steve has been a part of the show since we started and his love for the radio medium is clear each week to those who listen. I invite you listen and call in to the show each Saturday morning so you too can be part of the Tony Sanders Outdoors experience.
